TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires traversing on uneven ground sometimes across ditches, climbing, crouching and ability to crawl into pipes. Requires ability to lift tools, concrete bags, and materials. Requires ability to operate hand tools. Requires the ability to perform heavy manual work which will involve lifting rims, tools, concrete bags and materials, which can weigh up to 50 lbs. as well as handling of manhole covers and inlet grates (approximately 150 lbs) with assistance. Requires ability to operate hand tools and a portable concrete mixer.



TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed in an outdoors environment. May be exposed to insects, weeds, poisonous plants, bacteria, insecticides, pesticides, flooded areas, traffic, noise, and all types of weather conditions. May require some contact with the general public. Work will involve working inside underground pipes and culverts. Work may also be performed in traffic areas.

Ability to understand written and verbal instructions and six (6) months experience in concrete infrastructure construction, inspection, rehabilitation, and maintenance or related area; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. Two (2) years' experience in construction or related area preferred. Experience in driving tandem axle equipment preferred.

 


The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
