ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under an assigned fire station Lieutenant to support both Fire Suppression and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Operations to assess, and triage non-urgent, urgent and emergency request for medical care. Applies advanced knowledge and skills necessary to patient care and/or medical transportation. Facilitates access to a higher level of care when the needs of the patient exceed the capability level of the Advance Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT). Serves as a patient care team member in a hospital or health care setting when needed. May perform home visits to observe patient’s care and report to a higher-level of authority. Educates the public on fire safety, prevention, and hazard mitigation. Promotes and supports public safety initiatives such as smoke detector programs prevention education in schools, and commercial pre-incident planning. Performs pharmacological interventions with basic and advanced equipment to mitigate specific life-threatening, medical, and psychological situations. Serves as an important critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system. Gathers medical information by questioning patient or other bystanders to collect medical information. Utilizes specialized equipment also known as the jaws-of-life to pry open vehicles, equipment, or structures. Administers medical treatment, checks pulse and respiration in response to patient's medical condition. Listens for alarm and details of radio message received from alarm office. Assists with loading and unloading patients into or from the ambulance. Explores the safest evacuation routes to carry and assist conscious, and unconscious victims. Develops and maintains current knowledge of well-established firefighting procedures. Determines whether to transport patient using ambulance or wing based on medical situation and according to orders and protocols. Drives emergency ambulance on an emergency call and transports patients to hospital or medical facility. Connects hoses and couplings to water sources, pumps, nozzles, etc., and advances charged hose lines to fight the fire. Identifies flammable or hazardous materials. Lifts and maneuvers hand-held and hand-raised ladders. Extinguishes fires in areas where there is no visibility and extreme heat. Opens holes in structures using axes, pike poles, or other equipment. Preserves evidence of arson for use by an arson investigator. Cleans equipment and inspects or tests equipment on apparatus.

OTHER FUNCTIONS: 1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing with staff and the public. Requires walking, running, crawling, standing, lifting, climbing, or stooping. Requires the ability lifts and maneuvers hand-held and hand-raised ladders. Assists other Firefighters in lifting and carrying a victim and stretcher weighing an average 220-240 pounds (160–180-pound victim average and 60-pound stretcher). Requires the ability to operate an automobile.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Works from assigned fire station to perform firefighting/paramedic duties in emergency vehicles, such as ambulances, trucks, pumpers or other apparatus at the scene of fires, and/or on emergency calls. Works a twenty-four (24) hour shift, fifty-six (56) hours a week. Exposure to infections and diseases that are contagious. Exposed to extreme weather conditions. Assists hospital personnel in emergency situations. Deals with the public under possibly stressful and/or dangerous conditions. Performs firefighting duties exposed to extreme heat, heavy smoke, and toxic fumes at fire scenes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduate or equivalent required. Must be currently licensed by the State of Tennessee as an Advance Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) or be eligible for reciprocity in the State of Tennessee as a licensed AEMT and obtain State of Tennessee AEMT licensure prior to employment. Required to complete coursework /testing to obtain and maintain a Paramedic license by the State of Tennessee within eighteen (18) months as a condition of continued employment. Must progress through the State of Tennessee Fire Fighter Certification Program (as specified in NFPA Standards 1001) as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a paramedic license and a valid Class D Tennessee Driver's License with Endorsement F as a condition of continued employment.

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee House Bill 105, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
