Essential Job Functions:

Works under the direction of an assigned supervisor to direct and coordinate small crews responsible for the care and maintenance of City golf courses. Supervises and aids in duties related to turf management. Inspects and monitors overall turf conditions to determine the needs and care of the golf course. Develops and maintains techniques and soil treatments used for the healthy growth of turf, shrubs, plants, and other greenery, including application of commercial pesticides. Assists with developing procedures, materials, and safety standards applicable to turf diseases and proper safety methods. Assists in plant selection for grounds. Determines priorities of equipment maintenance and repair and schedules maintenance for the golf course. Operates equipment and tools, including turf equipment, tractor with attachments, irrigating systems, and high-pressure pumps. Reviews work performed by external contractors related to equipment and grounds maintenance. Exercises cost control measures to keep operating and capital expenses aligned with approved budgets. Drives to golf courses throughout the City to inspect daily activities and instruct assigned crew on proper use of equipment and completion of duties. Evaluates work performance, maintains daily attendance records, and provides disciplinary actions for assigned staff as required

Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.  

Typical Physical Demands:

Must be able to communicate, both verbally and in writing with staff, management, vendors, and external contractors. Must be able to operate equipment used in maintaining a golf course such as mowers, irrigating systems, tractor with attachments, etc. Requires the use of an automobile. Requires occasionally lifting (approx. 50 lbs.), reaching, climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, bending, and crouching for extended periods of time. Requires the ability to traverse uneven ground to visually inspect property 

Typical Working Conditions:

Majority of work is performed in an outdoor environment and often exposed to various weather conditions, dust, fumes, and chemicals. Requires travel throughout the City to inspect golf courses. Some weekend work may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma/equivalent and six (6) years’ experience in grounds maintenance, to include three (3) years in golf course maintenance, with one (1) of the six (6) years in a lead capacity; or any combination of training and experience which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess and maintain the Commercial Applicator Certification (C03 – Ornamental and Turf) from the State of Tennessee by the end of six (6) months as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a condition of continued employment. 

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the EXECEPTION of “first responders”, must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee House Bill 105, "first responder means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel and dispatchers of law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service departments."
