ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general supervision of assigned supervisor. Assigns, leads, and participates in the work of employees engaged in cleaning such areas as city streets, interstates, highways and thoroughfares, repairing equipment and maintenance. Provides work direction to various grounds maintenance functions, including mowing, trimming, weeding, mulching, pruning, and spraying chemicals. Trains workers in waste and debris collection and the proper use of equipment and materials in designated area(s). Checks work areas after completion to observe and report quality of work. Performs preventive maintenance, including checking of oil, gasoline, tires, coolant, battery, and general condition of equipment/ tools assigned, such as tractors, mowers, weed eaters, saws, edging tools, etc. Notifies supervisor verbally and/or in writing of repairs and maintenance work needed for buildings and equipment.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Must be able to operate various assigned equipment, trucks, agriculture tractors, riding mowers, and hand tools. Must be able to engage and disengage attachments to equipment. Requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, traversing uneven ground, pushing, pulling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing approximately 50 lbs., such as weed eaters, saws, edging tools, etc.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed outdoors exposed to odors, chemicals, and inclement weather. Weekend work will be required occasionally.

Ability to read, write, and understand written and verbal instructions. Must have working experience as a crewperson or truck driver. Experience operating various equipment, such as agriculture tractors, and riding mowers preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver's License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug Testing rules as a condition of continued employment. May be required to complete a battery of tests as deemed appropriate by Human Resources to evaluate competencies in operating related equipment.
The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the EXECEPTION of “first responders”, must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee House Bill 105, "first responder means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel and dispatchers of law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service departments."
