ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general supervision of the assigned Director to provide customer service to all visitors including adopters, owners of animals in our care, volunteers, and donors. Processes adoptions and redemptions with designated shelter software. Handles cash and cards for various adoption transactions. Advises and responds to complex customer inquiries regarding services, ordinances, and procedures related to sheltered animals and general animal welfare including animal availability, service timeline, and fees utilizing phone, e-mail, and social media. Creates, updates, and maintains electronic records associated with customers and animals. Assists owners of lost pets and adopters in successful adoption matching using the shelter software system. Provides safe and humane handling of animals on occasion when needed. Adheres to disease management and safety protocols. Contributes to the programs and services that support the shelter’s live outcome goal. Creates and edits various reports. Maintains various records and files. Proofreads, edits, and/or prepares written correspondence, presentations, charts, etc.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to operate a personal computer and to utilize various office software applications.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an animal shelter. Frequent exposure to noise, fumes, and unpleasant odors. Involves contact with staff, visitors, rescue workers, and the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and two (2) years of clerical experience; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Experience in an animal care facility preferred.


The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire.
