ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the direction of the Assistant Director of Strategic Partnerships to develop new partnerships and maintain existing partnerships with Shelby County Schools and other preschool – grade 12 educational institutions in conjunction with children's services librarians throughout the library system.  Works with Children and Teen Coordinator to develop awareness of the various library services to the community and to attract students through our partnerships to attend programs and activities.  Promotes library services and programs to schools to facilitate the use by students, parents and school administration.  Plans, organizes, and schedules visits to schools and business to make presentations about opportunities in partnering with the library by driving to various locations throughout the city.  Creates partnerships by understanding the needs of the school system and evaluating and recommending alternatives to management.  Evaluates the library systems existing school outreach services and recommends methods that will enable the library to better serve students and teachers.  Represents the Library at school functions with the students, parents, teachers and administrators.   Plans and promotes Explore Memphis and other special programming to engage students in reading and educational activities.    Coordinates and plans special events, such as library visits and library personnel to attend school activities.  Monitors, coordinates, and schedules volunteers of all ages to attend special event functions in assisting with various programs and activities.  Assists in coordinating and establishing an active Teen Advisory Board for the library.  Serves as the primary contact for students and school administration by collaborating and executing special programs requested by the schools. Participates in the library's collection and resource development by gathering and reporting information on student reading and educational needs.  Conducts surveys regarding current and future children and teen service needs.  Creates and compiles various reports by utilizing various Microsoft applications. Interacts and communicates verbally and in writing with vendors, management, and staff on a variety of issues and concerns.

  1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.


TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing with the general public and staff at all levels of the organization. Requires the ability to operate general office equipment such as computer, telephone and copier.  Requires some stooping, bending, stretching, and traversing when traveling to various meetings and moving throughout the building.  Requires the ability to lift and or carry materials which can weigh up to 40 lbs.  Requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
 
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Works primarily in public buildings. Requires frequent travel within Shelby County and occasional travel within United States.  Work schedule may include nights and weekends. 
 
Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field and six (6) years of professional experience with emphasis in children, youth, or educational service; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience which enables one to perform the essential duties of the job.   Must possess and maintain a valid driver license as a condition of continued employment. Master's degree in Education or Library Science preferred.   
 


The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
