ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor in Fire Communications to provide Journeyman level work in the installation, maintenance, repair, and testing of electrical systems and equipment related to Division of Fire Services electrical and communications systems. Performs installation, maintenance, and repairs to alarm circuit facilities, generator fed apparatus circuitry and devices, emergency generators, transfer switches, all facets of the Fire Division dispatching system, lead-acid battery banks, and fire facility electrical upgrades. Relocates aerial and underground alarm circuits. Operates fire service vehicle and emergency generator trailer. Installs wiring conduit, fixtures, generators, switches, circuit breaker boxes, telephone wiring and instruments, data cables, and electrical apparatus in buildings using hand tools, voltage testers and other testing devices. Inspects wiring and fixtures for conformance to local electrical codes and the National Electrical Code. Makes estimates and documents the use of time, money and materials.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires the ability to use hand tools, drills, hydraulic bender, etc. Requires the ability to lift and carry objects such as conduit and electrical tools weighing up to 50 lbs. and maneuver including stooping, bending, reaching over head, and climbing ladders. Requires the ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolding, bucket trucks, lifts, etc. Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment including exposure to dust, fumes, odors, noise, heat and all types of weather conditions. Must be able to work from heights up to 60 feet on scaffolding and in bucket trucks.
Requires travel to outlying work sites such as fire stations. Requires being on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and carrying a pager issued by the Fire Division.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Journeyman Electrician License and four (4) years of electrical maintenance experience including specific experience in electronics communications, and circuit maintenance; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must have a valid Tennessee driver’s license. 

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the EXECEPTION of “first responders”, must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee House Bill 105, "first responder means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel and dispatchers of law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service departments."
