THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS PRIOR TO INITIAL EMPLOYMENT:

  1. High school graduate or equivalent required.
  2. Emergency Medical Services licensure preferred.
  3. Candidate's age must be at least nineteen (19) years by the starting date of the Fire Recruit Class for which he/she is considered; and candidate's age cannot exceed forty-five (45) years by the date of the employment in this position.
  4. Must be record-free of any felony and/or misdemeanor conviction involving moral turpitude and pass required background investigation.
  5. Must pass comprehensive medical examination which meets the National Fire Protection Association Standards (NFPA-1582). Must pass a battery of tests which may include written fire selection tests and physical ability test.
  6. All applicant must have and maintain a valid Class D Tennessee Driver's License with at least one year of licensed driver experience upon entry into Fire Training Academy and as a condition of continued
    employment.
  7. Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Certification preferred.
  8. Must obtain and maintain current, both firefighting and EMS certifications and licenses with the State
    of Tennessee.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS THAT MUST BE COMPLETED AS A CONDITION OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:

           
1. Must successfully progress through the State of Tennessee Firefighter I Certification Program within
twelve (12) months with the Memphis Fire Department and must successfully progress through the
State of Tennessee Firefighter II Certification Program within thirty-six (36) months with the
Memphis Fire Department (as specified in NFPA Standard 1001), as a condition of continued
employment.
FIREFIGHTER CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
DEADLINE TO OBTAIN LICENSE FROM DATE OF EMPLOYMENT
FIREFIGHTER I 12 MONTHS*
FIREFIGHTER II 36 MONTHS*
*Must successfully complete certification as a condition of continued employment
2. Must successfully complete course work/testing and become certified by the State of Tennessee as an
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
(AEMT) within timeframe (below) based on their medical certification level at time of employment
and maintain licensure, as a condition of continued employment. If State of Tennessee laws and/or
regulations change enacting a new title for an Emergency Medical Technician (EMTs) license, the
employee must successfully complete course work and testing within twelve (12) months reflective
of the equivalent EMT licensure to be determined by the Fire Division as a condition of continued
employment.
3. Must successfully complete coursework/testing and become Paramedics licensed by the State of
Tennessee within timeframe (below) based on their medical certification level at time of employment
and maintain licensure, as a condition of continued employment. Successful applicants will be
notified if this requirement applies to them at the time of the employment offer.

Candidate must take national registry test within 30 days after successfully completing the AEMT licensure
program. *Additional attempts must be completed within 30 days of the previous attempt.
Candidate must apply for Tennessee State AEMT license within 10 days of passing the national registry test.
Candidate must submit Tennessee State AEMT license to Memphis Fire Administration within 10 day of
receiving license.
Candidate must take national registry test within 30 days after successfully completing the paramedic
licensure program. *Additional attempts must be completed within 30 days of the previous attempt.
Candidate must apply for Tennessee State Paramedic license within 10 days of passing the national registry
test.
Candidate must submit Tennessee State Paramedic license to Memphis Fire Administration within 10 day of
receiving license.


The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
