Homicide Analyst
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general direction Commanding Officer of the Investigative Service Unit or designee. Analyzes and interprets complex homicide datasets. Collaborates with law enforcement personnel to gather and analyze crime scene information, witness statements, forensic evidence, and criminal intelligence from various sources. Develops and maintains databases to track homicide trends, patterns, and geographical hotspots and conducts strategic crime analysis to identify potential suspects, motives, and connections between cases. Analyzes criminal intelligence information, prepares intelligence reports and bulletins, and forecasts future criminal activity by analyzing long-term crime patterns and trends. Provides strategic guidance in resource deployment to prevent and suppress criminal activities, aids investigations, and increases case clearance rates by identifying similarities, patterns, and trends among offenses. Conducts modern quantitative analyses, creates association matrices and link analyses, and coordinates the exchange of criminal activity information across agencies. Researches and interprets statistical data and intelligence from various sources, including social media and previous investigations, and developing recommendations for subsequent investigations. Writes analytical reports, creating charts and maps, and presenting findings to superiors. Utilizes specialized computer applications to manage and analyze crime data, disseminates intelligence to prevent and detect criminal activity, and participates in meetings focused on police mission strategies and intelligence sharing. Makes recommendations on the latest trends, methods, and technologies, and supports crime control efforts throughout the department, ensuring data integrity and accuracy in all analytical processes.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to operate general office equipment such as a computer, scanner, copier, and telephone. Requires traversing uneven land when conducting onsite visits throughout the city. Ability to sit for extended periods and use a computer.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed in an office environment with regular exposure to computer screens and standard office equipment. Occasional fieldwork in various weather conditions and exposure to sensitive and distressing information. Occasional travel to crime scenes, courtrooms, or training sessions may be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, Statistics, or a related field and a minimum of six (6) years of proven experience in homicide analysis, crime analysis, or a related field. Familiarity with forensic techniques, crime scene investigation procedures, and legal principles. Strong analytical skills with proficiency in statistical analysis software and data visualization tools (e.g., SPSS, SAS, R, Python, Tableau). Working experience in computer data systems, statistical analysis such as SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), and mapping software programs such as ArcGIS (Geographic Information Systems). Must be able to obtain a Tennessee Information Enforcement (TIES) certification within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain it as a condition of continued employment. May be required to complete a battery of tests as deemed appropriate by Human Resources to evaluate competencies in performing job duties. All candidates must successfully pass a criminal justice employment background check to work within the Police Services Division. Master’s degree preferred.
