ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Works under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor to inspect and repair irrigation systems at City golf courses and City Park properties. Organizes, schedules, and performs irrigation maintenance activities for various assigned locations. Makes repairs to irrigation systems including valves, rotors, sprinklers, backflow, and valve boxes. Performs field tests on irrigation systems to determine efficiency and to complete required audits. Calculates accurate watering schedules for irrigation systems by combining plant water use, soils and local weather data. Monitors irrigation inventory levels and works in conjunction with Turf and Golf Course Foremen to develop irrigation cycles. Orders supplies as needed. Maintains and repairs irrigation pipes, pump stations, booster pump stations, recirculation pumps, fountains, and computerized central and radio controls. Troubleshoots electrical faults in the irrigation system, including installing and repairing electrical wiring to irrigation heads and controllers. Performs turf maintenance, fertilizes turf, renovates, aerates, and mows. Operates light and heavy-duty vehicles to include but limited to backhoe, chain saws, hydraulic boom, blowers, and small tools. Maintains and performs various duties to include hand-finishes grade, application of seed, straw, or sod, planting, weeding, digging, trimming, edging, litter pick-up, and spreading topsoil. Maintains and performs preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and notifies management of needed repairs. Participates in meetings related to irrigation. Transports and moves equipment as needed in making repairs or installments. Applies chemicals as prescribed. Ensures all equipment safety and maintenance procedures are followed. Ensures all installation work is performed in accordance with industry and company standards. Creates and prepares reports using the appropriate systems.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to operate general office equipment such as a personal computer and telephone. Requires the ability to operate automobile to drive to various meetings or facilitates. Requires some lifting, bending, crouching, and traversing on uneven ground. Requires the ability to operate light and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles such as but not limited to back-hoe, front-end loaders, mini-excavators, hydraulic boom and small equipment tools.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Majority of work is performed in a outdoors environment. May be exposed to various temperatures, odors, fumes, noise or unpleasant surrounding. Frequently travels throughout the City to various locations. Must be able to work various shifts, weekends, overtime, and holidays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience in operating all types of heavy equipment required; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. May be required to complete a battery of tests as deemed appropriate by Human Resources to evaluate competencies in operating the following heavy equipment: front-end loader, back-hoe loader, track-hoe excavator, and bulldozer (crawler tractor).


The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
