Municipal Planner(2 Openings)
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Primarily desk work. Requires ability to operate personal computer, telephone, and other basic office equipment. Requires ability to read and interpret federal, state, and local regulations and policy regarding planning. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with staff, management, and public. Requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment, in the community, and in the field inspecting areas and buildings or conducting community meetings, some of which may be held in the evening. Requires travel between building sites and to various meetings, offices, and other locations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in City or Regional Planning, Architecture, Urban Design, or related field and two (2) years of experience in planning, urban design, architecture, transportation, GIS/analytics, civic engagement, or community development; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Master’s degree may substitute for two (2) years of experience. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a condition of continued employment. Bilingual (Spanish/English) speaking abilities strongly preferred. Working experience with relevant software such as ArcGIS, SketchUp, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite is preferred. Accreditation from American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) or Congress of the New Urbanism (CNU-A) is preferred.
The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
