ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under general supervision of assigned supervisor to order, store, and issue parts, materials, supplies, tools, and equipment requiring a working knowledge of types of materials stored. Quantities purchased may be relatively large or require purchasing some technical items that may require dealing directly with manufacturers. Solicits telephone and written price quotations from vendor. Orders or initiates paperwork to purchase supplies necessary for the support of work activities in department and/or division. Keeps record of items received and issued, manually or using computer. Monitors inventory levels and maintains prescribed quantities. Verifies shop manuals, vendor catalogs, and/or price lists to determine the type and price of materials are correct. Communications with vendors, management, and users if substitution or modification of parts when replacement is not available. .Locates and consults with vendors on supplies not available through regular channels as needed Follow-ups and expedites orders as needed. Checks and approves for payment invoices for orders placed. Compares information on requisitions and invoices to materials received to verify accuracy of order. Examines incoming stock for defects and to verify conformance to specifications. Labels or marks identifying codes on incoming stock. Stores articles in bins, on floor, or on shelves, according to identifying information, such as style, size, or type of material. Determines methods of storage, identification, and stock location. Delivers or picks-ups supplies, or equipment as needed by driving a light truck to various locations. Uses material handling equipment, such as forklifts to move materials within the facility. Maintains physical appearance of supply room. Interacts and communicates verbally and in writing with vendors, management, and staff on a variety of issues concerning parts and supplies. Keeps and maintains automated records of materials and equipment received and issued. Monitors inventory levels and maintains prescribed quantities. Returns defected parts or supplies to vendors as needed and documents information in system in accordance with policies and procedures. Generates and prepares various reports regarding inventory and equipment to management. Travels to outlying satellite facilities periodically to assist with inventory, special projects, and to audit for inventory parts and supplies.

- May act as lead by training or directing the work of those who perform routine aspects of job.
- Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Carries, pushes, rolls or uses material handling equipment to move materials. Requires physical activities such as climbing, bending, stooping, pulling, and pushing. Occasionally required to lift 75 lbs., frequently required to lift 35-50 lbs. Requires ability to operate light truck to pick up and deliver materials. Sufficient vision is needed to obtain information from labels, forms, catalogs, computer printouts, etc. Uses standard office equipment including personal computer.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed in a storeroom environment that may or may not be climate-controlled with some outdoor work required to deliver and pick-up materials. Frequently exposed to dust and may be exposed to solvents, oils, fuels, pesticides, etc. when stocked in storeroom. May be exposed to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, noise, and exposure to some industrial chemicals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School graduation and two (2) years of experience working in a warehouse and parts distribution system; or equivalent combination of education and experience which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as condition of continued employment. May be required to learn data entry to maintain automated inventory system. All candidates must successfully pass a criminal justice employment background check to work within the Police Services Division.
The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
