ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Works under the direct supervision of a Public Service Corps Supervisor. Picks up litter and garbage by hand and/or long prong pole. Picks up, loads, hauls, and unloads municipal solid waste materials including, but not limited to vegetation, brush, trash, and other forms of refuse and debris from streets, alley’s, rights-of-way’s, illegal dumps, and other assigned locations. Utilizes a hand-held device such as a tablet or smartphone to create and/or close service request and/or tag pile request.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires the use of hand and motorized tools and equipment to perform various assigned job functions. Requires the ability to perform heavy manual work which will involve bending, kneeling, reaching, pulling, pushing, crouching, and standing for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. or up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Must be able to traverse on various surfaces.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed outdoors in sometimes adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to odors, noise, dust, pollen, fumes and chemicals such as pesticides. May be required to work nights and weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to understand written and verbal instructions, or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must work towards a GED, College Degree or trade school certificate while in the Public Service Corps program to maintain continued employment.


The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
