Public Svcs Spec (Part-Time)
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under general supervision of an Agency Manager or other designated supervisory personnel. Woks in a team environment to provide exceptional customer service that is in line with the Library's Brand Promises (Welcoming, Fresh & Fun, Helpful, and Transformative). Plans, coordinates, develops, and implements library programs and community outreach activities, including STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) development, career development, cultural enrichment, life-long learning, and literacy development. Provides public information and readers' advisory services. Works at various library agencies to assist with the collection and development of library materials. Recommends appropriate reading materials and collection resources to library management. Works in teams with various library personnel to perform professional library services, such as assisting customers with computers, identifying materials in a collection, etc. Provides basic circulation desk services, as needed. Lifts and carries books, supplies, or materials to assist customers. Stocks library shelves with books and reading materials. Assists in training staff and volunteers, as assigned.

- Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing. Must be able to operate personal computer and all basic office equipment. Requires stooping, bending, stretching, pushing cartloads of books, supplies, etc. up to 40 lbs and lifting up to 25 lbs of books.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Works primarily in a public library environment. May require some travel within Shelby County to various meetings and work areas (library branches). Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which includes nights and weekends.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma and one (1) year related work experience in a Library service priority area, such as STEAM development, job & career development, cultural enrichment, life-long learning, and literacy development; or any combination of experience or training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Bachelor's degree preferred.
The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
