ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Works under the direct supervision of an assigned supervisor. Supervises foremen in the assigned crew duties of maintaining trash and debris removal in various locations around the city. Picks up, loads, hauls, and unloads municipal solid waste materials including, but not limited to, vegetation, brush, trash, and other forms of refuse and debris from streets, alleys, rights-of-way, illegal dumps, and other assigned locations. Utilizes a hand-held device such as a tablet or smartphone to create and/or close service requests and/or tag pile requests. Captures Before and After Pictures with a time-stamp application. Reports work progress and requests supplies and equipment as needed. Creates a Before and After Inventory checklist to ensure all items are accounted for such as City work cell phones, truck keys, and lawn equipment.. Reviews and maintains employee time records. Provides work direction and keeps records of daily work activities. Inspects daily activities and instructs assigned crew on the proper use, operation, and maintenance of various vehicles and equipment. Assists with trailer driving training, lawn equipment training, and maintenance logs. Drives to various worksites to transport Corps Members and to conduct inspections. Attends monthly PJA meetings and maintains a daily data report sheet. Trains workers in waste and debris collection and proper use of equipment and materials in designated area(s). Checks work areas after completion to observe and report the quality of work. Performs preventive maintenance, including checking oil, gasoline, tires, coolant, battery, and general condition of equipment/tools assigned, such as tractors, mowers, weed eaters, saws, edging tools, etc. Notifies supervisor, verbally and/or in writing, of repairs and maintenance work needed for buildings and equipment. Prepares reports for on-the-job injuries, property damage and street assignments with boundaries in different areas of the city.

- Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to climb onto and operate assigned equipment and to engage and disengage attachments. Must be able to handle various hand tools. Requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, traversing uneven ground, and lifting materials and supplies weighing approx. 50 lbs. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed in an outdoor environment and often exposed to various weather conditions, odors, and dust. Must be available to work weekends.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to understand written and verbal instructions, and any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must work towards a GED, College Degree, or trade school certificate while in the Public Service Corps program to maintain continued employment as well as four (4) years of related experience. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a condition of continued employment.
The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
