ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Works under the supervision of a foreman or other assigned supervisor.  Analyzes and inspects a variety of automotive, diesel and turf equipment (light and heavy), and related parts and units.  Conducts advanced diagnostics on vehicles and /or equipment to determine nature and extent of damage or malfunction and performs specialized repairs. Gathers specific information to enter into system about vehicle issues. Advises customers on necessary repairs and maintenance. Works within the financial limitation of the facilities established budget. Uses the maintenance management software, to create historical records for service visits and work orders for the mechanical staff assignments. Prioritizes and assigns work assignments to Mechanics to complete repairs. Maintains repair paperwork of completed service work and communicates suggested future maintenance. Issues repair parts inventory and labor charges, according to the labor time guide, on work orders and inspects work completed by mechanics. Trains new service advisors.    
 
OTHER FUNCTIONS: Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Must be able to operate an automobile. Requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a variety of staff members and management.  Must be able to operate computers programmed with diagnostic software and various diagnostic equipment/scanners.  May be required to operate tire mounting machines, tire balance machines, bench grinder, cutting torch, hydraulic hose crimper, and
mig welder. Requires the ability to operate equipment and mechanical tools such as hydraulic pneumatic tools, electric tools, hand held scanners, code readers, impact guns and other various hand tools.  Requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time and traverse uneven surfaces.  Requires the ability to operate an automobile to and from various working stations for inspection purposes.  Requires the ability to perform manual work which will involve stooping, bending, reaching, crouching, climbing, balancing and lifting equipment and materials, which can weigh up to 50 lbs. or up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
 
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed outdoors and in an automotive repair shop environment.  May be exposed to noise, dust, grease, and fumes.  May be exposed to various weather conditions.  Some field work involved as needed
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : High School graduate and (8) eight years' experience as a mechanic/technician and/or service provider. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver's License or obtain within six (6) months of employment and as a condition of continued employment. Must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug Testing Rules. Must possess and maintain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) C1 Service Consultant Certification or obtained within twelve (12) months of employment as a condition of continued employment. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications in Light Automotive, or Medium-Heavy Truck strongly preferred. Working experience of techniques involved in the use of mechanic hand tools and understanding the basic principles of automotive maintenance/repairs preferred.  Additional Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications preferred.

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire.
