ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Works under the supervision of the Surveyor Party Chief in the Engineering Division. Assists Party Chief in obtaining data pertaining to angles, elevations, points and contours to be used for Engineering designs: Operates surveying instruments such as steel tapes, automatic levels, Theodolite, Electronic Total Stations and Data Collector; measures diameter of manhole and size of pipe with tape by removing approx. 100 lbs. manhole cover with pick and climbing into manhole; performs mathematical calculations to determine distances between two points; assists in clearing survey line by using axe, bush blade, or chain saw; communicates with other workers by using hand-held walkie-talkie; and carries equipment including electronic distance measuring instrument and tripod across surveying site.

OTHER FUNCTIONS
1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires walking long distances sometimes over uneven land, across ditches, river swamp land, and wooded areas carrying equipment (approx. 50 lbs.). Requires ability to operate digital instruments, hand-held walkie-talkies, and hand tools. Requires heavy lifting such as manhole covers (approx. 100 lbs.) and the ability to climb into manholes.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Majority of work is performed outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions. May be exposed to traffic, insects, seeds, and poisonous plants.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school education and one (1) year experience in operating survey equipment; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Previous experience as an Engineering Aide preferred. Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License.

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire.
