TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with management, staff, and other groups. Requires the ability to conduct site visits which involves traversing uneven land on foot. Requires the ability to view/review plans and drawings, and operate a personal computer and automobile.
 
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Majority of work is performed indoors in an office environment. Involves some work in outside weather conditions to perform on-site inspections of potential construction sites. Requires travel to off-site locations to perform inspections.
 
Bachelor's degree in Planning, Engineering or related field and seven (7) years of progressively more responsible experience in planning, engineering, or transportation of which three (3) of the seven (7) years is in a supervisor/lead capacity; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions.  Master's degree preferred. License to practice engineering in the State of Tennessee or Certified Planner is preferred.  Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license as a condition of continued employment.

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the EXECEPTION of “first responders”, must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee House Bill 105, "first responder means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel and dispatchers of law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service departments."
