Waste Water Treatment Mech Trainee (Maxson Plant)
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Works under the supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTP) Maintenance Manager or designee at the wastewater treatment facilities in the Public Works Division. Performs maintenance activities on machinery and equipment throughout the plant as indicated on preventative maintenance schedules or at the direction of supervisor. Maintains, repairs, and lubricates equipment using hand tools and power tools. Operates wastewater treatment facility equipment including valves, pumps, blowers, and conveyors. Operates equipment such as dump trucks, flushing trucks, roll-off trucks, and tractors on plant property. Cleans, lubricates, and performs other routine maintenance on machinery, equipment, and vehicles. Backflushes pumps in order to clear obstructions. Reads and interprets operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings to perform WTP maintenance. Records meter readings of equipment and machinery to monitor current conditions of the equipment. Notifies management directly, verbally or in writing, of critical problems and emergency situations.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to read meters, gages, blueprints and manufacturer’s manuals. Requires visual and physical inspections of mechanical system and have ability to detect unusual characteristics. Requires traversing on uneven ground and the ability to climb ladders and stairs. Requires lifting (approx. 50 lbs.), pulling, reaching, stooping, stretching, balancing, and crouching. Requires the ability to operate an automobile, dump truck, and tractor. Requires the ability to operate general office equipment such as computer, copier, and telephone.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Twenty-four hour, seven-day-week operation, involves shift work assignments. Work is performed inside and outside of the facilities. May be exposed to dust, fumes, odors, noise, heat and all types of extreme weather conditions. May require ability to work any assigned shift.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent certification. Some previous industrial or mechanical maintenance experience is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within eighteen (18) months of accepting the position and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. An Associate’s Degree in Applied Technology is required within 48 months of hire.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The duration of employment for applicants selected for the Maintenance Mechanic Trainee Program will not exceed 48 months as a Trainee unless otherwise approved. During this time, Trainees will be in probationary status and required to attend and pass vocational/technical training classes paid by the City while alternating with working at the treatment plants on a full-time basis until an Associate’s Degree in Applied Technology is obtained. Position will promote to WTP Maintenance Mechanic I, when a Class B CDL and Associate’s Degree are obtained.
