ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Works under the supervision of assigned manager to develop and implement a comprehensive fitness/wellness program for City employees. Provides an inviting environment of group fitness instruction to promote fitness, health, and wellness in the City. Conducts group fitness classes for all ages and levels.  Instructs pre-choreographed or freestyle group sessions and classes to a variety of participants in person or via virtual technology.  Acts as a fitness resource by leading group fitness classes, maintaining positive relationships with patrons, and encouraging continued class attendance. Creates personalized fitness and meal plans for employees. Ensures fitness center equipment is clean and operational. Tracks employee utilization and provides utilization reports. Designs instructional fitness programs and ensures group fitness classes are delivered with high quality and safe for all fitness levels. Maintains appearance and security of the fitness center. Demonstrates proper techniques and modifies instruction style to all level of fitness class participants.  Increases member attendance through providing strong instructional skills and connecting and motivating participants.  Participates in employee training and/or meetings and other division programs as needed.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1.         Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.  Requires the ability to operate general office equipment such as a personal computer and telephone.  Requires the ability to lead exercise classes and demonstrate proper use of exercise equipment.

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Majority of work is performed in a fitness center including exposure to exercise equipment that can be potentially dangerous.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year experience as a fitness instructor.  Must possess CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and First Aid certifications through American Red Cross Association and must maintain certifications as a condition of continued employment.  Must possess at least one of the following Group Exercise Certifications, National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM), American Council of Exercise (ACE), American Fitness Aerobic Association (AFAA), or National Aerobics and Fitness Trainers Association or similar certifications and must maintain certification as a condition of continued employment. 


The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
