ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Works under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor. Performs repairs and maintenance on various types of machinery, equipment, and property such as garbage carts, recycle bins, and park property. Delivers and/or picks up new, used, or defective carts from various locations and work areas if assigned. May clean cart tools and parts with appropriate cleaning solvents and equipment including steam cleaner. Loads and unload carts and part shipments by hand and by using forklift if assigned to Solid Waste Management. Repairs and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment used in an asphalt plant such as pneumatic tools and conveyor belts. Operates lathe, grinder, and other tools to repair parts if assigned to Street Maintenance. Installs, repairs, and performs general maintenance on playground, exercise, and athletic field equipment, basketball goals, and fences if assigned to Park Services property. Repairs or replaces defective parts using hand and power tools. Performs routine maintenance at numerous facilities using mechanical equipment and tools such as air-powered hand tools and air compressors. May keep and maintain daily maintenance records. May drive various motor vehicles depending on assigned division such as a packer truck, bob truck, and pick-up truck with utility trailer to dispose or replace old parts and carts. Retrieves and enters work orders and service request data using various computer devices and applications if assigned. Operates two-way radio to communicate with supervisor and other workers. 

 OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1.  Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

 TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires ability to operate assigned equipment such as jack hammer, portable cement mixer, post hole digger, ladder, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems and various hand tools. Requires ability to pull and lift garbage carts (approx. 50 lbs.) on and off truck and equipment and materials which can weigh up to 50 lbs. or up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time and traverse on uneven ground which may involve kneeling, climbing, bending, crouching, stooping, and reaching. May be required to operate various type of vehicles depending on assigned division such as a ¾ ton maintenance truck, a tandem dump truck, and/or a 3-ton flatbed dump truck, maintenance truck or an automobile to drive to various locations. Requires the ability to operate various mobile devices and computer systems/applications if assigned.

 TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed outdoors and in a warehouse. May be exposed to various weather conditions, dust, odors, noise, and traffic. Travels to various locations to dispose of and pick up equipment and parts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Ability to read and write and understand written and verbal instructions and working experience in conducting minor repairs on vehicles, equipment, and facilities. If assigned to Solid Waste division must possess and maintain a valid driver license with an F endorsement as a condition of continued employment. If assigned to a division other than Solid Waste must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. Knowledge of geographic area of Memphis preferred. Basic knowledge of electrical and plumbing equipment preferred.


The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of "first responders", must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee Senate Bill No. 29, "first responder" means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
