ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under supervision of the assigned supervisor in the Public Works
Division. Assists in conducting inspections of drainage systems or sewer lines and connected appurtenances, such as
grease traps, clean-outs and siphons to determine repair needs throughout the City including streets, alleys, woods,
and flood plain areas. Loads and unloads necessary equipment from truck. Removes manhole covers and inlet grates.
Climbs into manholes and catch basins to place and retrieve equipment. Assists with the setup and disassembly of
various equipment including positioning cameras in drains or sewer lines, samplers, flow meters, and smoke
machines in areas. Dispenses appropriate chemicals per instructions from the Pollution Control Inspector if
assigned to Environmental Inspections. Helps with the inspection of equipment to detect malfunctions and to
perform routine maintenance services and tests. Adjusts and makes minor repairs to electronic and other inspection
related equipment. Informs residents of work being performed in the area. Inspects channel lined and unimproved
ditches as part of annual inspection operations if assigned. Drives vehicles to work site including camera vans,
or pickup trucks. May ride in small boat to perform inspections during flood seasons if assigned.


OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.


TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires the ability to operate camera vans or pickup trucks. Requires
traversing uneven ground in woods, ditches, weeded areas, and flood lands. Requires the ability to bend, stoop, reach
above head and climb in and out of manholes. Must be able to operate and ride in small boat if assigned. Must be
able to enter confined spaces such as manholes, catch basins, culverts, and other drainage related structures.
Requires handling inspection equipment and lifting, with assistance, manhole covers and inlet grates which weigh
approximately 150 lbs.


TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed outdoors and exposed to changing
weather conditions and temperatures. May be exposed to noise, traffic, insects, weeds, poisonous plants, bacteria,
and pesticides. May be exposed to emulsifiers, insecticide, sewer solvents, bacteria, etc. Frequent travel throughout
the city to various facilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduate or equivalent with some experience or training which
enables one to perform essential job functions and the ability to understand written and verbal instructions. Must
obtain a valid Class "B" (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of date of
hire as a condition of continued employment and must comply with the Federal Department of Transportation
(DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules. Certification under National Association of Sewer Service Companies
(NASSCO) Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program (P.A.C.P.) is preferred.

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire.
