ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Chemist. Assists plant chemist in supervising laboratory activities and in conducting analysis of sewage treatment and industrial wastes: Conducts chemical analysis of samples including all associated preparations and calculations, usually requiring considerable knowledge of chemical analytical techniques; trains, directs and monitors the activities of assigned personnel; uses special instruments, such as gas chromatograph, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and inductive coupled plasma spectrometer; prepares and maintains reports and records on analytical results and other assigned projects; interprets test methods and results, laboratory procedures, and analyzed data for lab personnel; assists in developing or modifying new laboratory procedures; oversees the operation and use of sampling equipment and supplies, and insures that sampling schedules are adhered to; monitors wells located throughout the plant grounds and collects waste samples as needed; and maintains supply inventory for work area.


OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1.Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned from time to time.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires manual dexterity to use laboratory and sampling equipment. Must be able to conduct field sampling and monitor wells throughout the facility. Requires the ability to identify colors and distinguish odors. Requires ability to lift laboratory equipment and supplies (approx 40 lbs.). Requires ability to operate personal computer and automobile. Must be able to communicate with management and staff.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed in a laboratory setting with some outdoor work required in collecting samples and monitoring wells. May be exposed to chemicals and cleaning solvents, and to various weather conditions, fumes and odors. Requires the use and wear of protective gear when necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or Bio-Chemistry and one (1) year of applicable laboratory experience; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess a valid TN driver's license.

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the EXECEPTION of “first responders”, must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee House Bill 105, "first responder means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel and dispatchers of law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service departments."
