ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Works under the supervision of the assigned foreman to repair, paint, maintain, and replace all types of damaged vehicles, including cars and trucks. Repairs, paints, or replaces a variety of damaged city vehicles, body parts, or fixtures. Applies paint to vehicle surfaces using brushes, rollers, spray equipment or, as required, in a paint/spray booth as necessary. Repairs and/or removes for salvage and replaces new and used components such as sheet metal, plastic, and fiberglass. Straightens minor and medium frame damage. Operates MIG welders, plasma cutters, panel spotters, frame grabbers, paint equipment, acetylene welding, etc. Repairs electrical wires and replaces mechanical components as needed. Applies proper primer and/or sealant as necessary and sandblast surfaces as needed. Edges replacement parts and masks non-paint surfaces (chrome, glass, etc.). Determines type and quality of paint required for particular tasks. Mixes paint to match existing color and proper consistency. Determines proper drying time and performs touch-up if needed. Applies and removes decals on vehicles as needed. Drives vehicles necessary to haul materials and equipment or move vehicles to designated work areas. Maintains work area in safe and organized manner.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS

 

1.      Operates transport equipment to move vehicle to designated location as needed.

2.      Delivers or picks-up necessary equipment or parts as needed.

3.       Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

 

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires manual dexterity to use paint brushes and equipment. Requires the ability to identify colors and mix paint to the proper consistency. Must be able to lift equipment and/or materials weighing approximately 50 lbs. Requires the ability to reach, stoop, balance, and crouch for extended periods of time. Requires ability to operate air-tools, sanders, emery grinders, and floor jacks.

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Work is performed indoors or outdoors in an Automotive Shop environment. Exposure to various weather conditions, confined spaces, dust, fumes, odors, and noise. Protective gear must be worn or used as necessary.

 



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduate or equivalent and four (4) years’ experience in paint and body repair, or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a condition of continued employment. Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License preferred.

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the EXECEPTION of “first responders”, must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee House Bill 105, "first responder means paid, full-time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel and dispatchers of law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service departments."
